Cinnamon rolls originate in northern Europe. Cinnamon comes from the Cinnamomum verum tree in Sri Lanka. It is harvested during monsoon season, October - January and May - August, when the bark is soft enough to break off in coils. Marco Polo introduced cinnamon into Europe in the 13th century. Romans and Egyptians recorded eating various types of sticky buns before the first cinnamon roll, which included dates, raisins, and honey. The well known and loved Cinnabon brand opened in 1985, commercializing our cinnamon roll.
4 cups flour
1/4 cup sugar
1 packet of Instant Yeast (2 & 1/4 teaspoons)
1 teaspoon salt
1 & 1/2 cups milk
6 tablespoons butter
1 egg
1/2 cup butter
2/3 cup sugar
Cinnamon (measure with your heart)
1/2 cup butter
3 cups powdered sugar
A splash of vanilla extract
2 tablespoons milk
Microwave the milk until it is lukewarm (~30 seconds)
Add the yeast and let site for 5 minutes
Once the mixture is foamy, add to your mixing bowl
Melt the butter and add it to the mixture. Once it has cooled down slightly, add the egg
Gradually add in dry ingredient (flour, sugar, salt)
Once the dough is a sticky texture, take it out of the mixing bowl and begin hand kneading for 5 - 10 minutes, adding flour as needed
Let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until it doubles in size
In the meantime, prepare the sugar filling
Melt the butter (30 - 60 seconds in the microwave)
Add cinnamon & sugar and mix
Once the dough is ready, preheat oven to 350° F
Roll out the dough into a rectangular shape
Spread sugar filling evenly across the surface
Using a knife, cut 1 inch wide strips and roll them up. Place the rolls onto a baking pan
Bake for 45 minutes
While they are baking, prepare the frosting
Soften butter in the microwave, add it to mixing bowl and beat until smooth
Gradually add powdered sugar and stir until combined
Add in vanilla extract and milk
When the buns are finished baking, take them out of the oven and let cool for a little
Spread the frosting and enjoy!
