If you are looking for a sport that combines teamwork and character-building, rugby might be the sport for you. Rugby is fast-paced, challenging, and unlike any other sport. WESS is building a rugby program that is on the road to success and is on the lookout for new players. Seasoned players and beginners alike, here are reasons to consider Rugby at WESS.
While rugby is seen as an “up-and-coming sport,” within the United States, it is the predecessor to American football. Fun fact: the U.S. were former Olympic rugby champions, having won gold at the 1920 and 1924 Summer Olympics. At a glance, rugby and American football may appear the same, but rugby is an entirely different animal. While both involve getting a cylindrical leather ball to the end-zone, they go about it in different ways. In rugby, players don't use pads, and the balls are only thrown laterally or to the side. Unlike American football, which primarily consists of forward passes, rugby is an intense game with strategic and constant action, but it's also about communication, discipline, and respect. Each player is a crucial part of the team's success.
Rugby may not have always been in the spotlight on the East Coast, but its recent popularity has led to WESS becoming a part of the growing rugby culture here
While rugby is physically demanding, it’s also about character-building. The sport creates an environment that fosters teamwork, confidence, and communication. In fact, WESS’s own Coach Jozef believes that this program is not only about improving technical skills but also about helping athletes grow as individuals.
“The culture of rugby is one where respect and teamwork come first,” says Coach Jozef. “You may have disagreements or differences off the field, but when you’re on the pitch, you fight for your teammates no matter what.”
This year, the WESS Rugby team has some standout athletes. Tyler Wu and Jake Salvaggio are captains of the boys' varsity team, both bringing skill and leadership. On the girls' side, Kelis is leading the girls' team this season, with a vice- or co-captain to be decided. These athletes have been involved with the team inside and outside WESS. Their dedication to the sport has them eyeing scholarships and a future in the sport.
Rugby is played in the PSAL (Public School Athletic League), one of the city's most competitive leagues, with teams from all boroughs. Currently, WESS does not have its own official team, and the structure requires support from established programs. However, the program is growing fast and aims to establish its own team within the league this year.
“I’m confident that with the team we have this year, we’re ready to win,” says Coach Jozef. “If we had played last year, I guarantee we would have taken home the trophy, and I’m even more excited about this year.” Spring season will be influential for WESS Rugby and you can join a team making a name for themselves.
WESS believes that students should thrive both on and off the field. To support this balance, a rugby elective was introduced. This elective led to significant improvements: Jozef added that "94% of students' attendance has increased, 86% of them have seen a difference in their grades based on coming to rugby… over 90% of them have improved their confidence”
The current structure allows athletes to focus on academics while simultaneously excelling in the sport. This eliminates many of the worries of current athletes as it allows them to keep up with schoolwork and socials outside of school.
Rugby is more than just a sport– it's a community. Rugby is all about unity, whether through games on the field or friendships forged through tradition. Coach Jozef explains that rugby's culture combines respect and support: “The beautiful thing about rugby is that no matter your background or differences, when you step onto that field, you’re all in it together. It’s a family.”
This team spirit makes rugby a unique experience. Whether you score, tackle your hardest, or cheer on your teammates, you're part of something bigger than yourself.
If you are looking for a sport that will physically and mentally challenge you, rugby may be the sport for you. Being a part of this close-knit, supportive team allows anyone to thrive. The team is growing, the competition is fierce, and the opportunity to develop athletic and personal skills is incredible.
Join Rugby this spring and become your best self. Rugby is calling—will you answer?
